Ope Brief aan President Ramaphosa
– Die land is by ʼn kruispad. Die President se keuse tussen ʼn disfunksionele ANC aan die een kant en Suid-Afrika aan die ander kant – Dit kan nie beide wees nie!
Die onderstaande ope brief deur Dries Wiese, Voorsitter van die Afrikanerbond is gister (11 Julie 2022) na die kantoor van President Ramaphosa gestuur.

Geagte President Ramaphosa
Met u ontvangs van die finale verslag oor staatskaping op 22 Junie 2022 en die vrystelling daarvan in die openbaar het u aangedui, “Ek sal, in ooreenstemming met die opdrag van die Hooggeregshof, binne vier maande vanaf hierdie datum die volledige verslag van die Kommissie formeel aan die Parlement voorlê, tesame met 'n aanduiding van my voornemens oor die implementering van die Kommissie se aanbevelings.”
Die media het die koste van die staatskaping op R57 miljard geraam. Dié bedrag is deur die Gupta-familie en hul volgelinge uit die staatskas gebuit, en hulle het self minstens R15,5 miljard in hul eie sakke gesteek.
Die Zondo-verslag raam dat 97% van die R57 miljard van Transnet en Eskom gebuit is (Rapport, 26 Junie 2022), te midde van voortgesette wanadministrasie en korrupsie in staatsdepartemente en ons plaaslike regeringsowerhede. Terwyl ons hierdie brief skryf, betaal Suid-Afrika die prys. Ons gaan gebuk onder beurtkrag van tot fase 6 weens dekades van wanadministrasie, diefstal en sabotasie by Eskom, 'n staatsbeheerde entiteit.
Tydens die onrus in Julie 2021 het oproerige skares nog miljarde geplunder en infrastruktuur gevandaliseer. Tot op hede is daar nog geen bevredigende redes gegee of gereageer op die onluste en plundering nie, wat ook hul oorsprong gehad het in diepgesetelde ANC-verdelings en die arrestasie en gevangesetting van mnr. Jacob Zuma. Ons grondwetlike demokrasie is deur anargie bedreig, en die omvang van die onrus moes voorkom gewees het.
Daar is tans 'n geweldige gebrek aan vertroue in Suid-Afrika. Die burgerlike samelewing het alle vertroue in die regering, politici, die staatsdiens en die polisie verloor. Dit kon (ten minste gedeeltelik) aangespreek gewees het in die nasionale konsensus wat u in die staatsrede (SONA) van 10 Februarie 2022 belowe het, wat veronderstel was om binne 100 dae na die staatsrede te gebeur – nog 'n verbreekte belofte.
Suid-Afrikaners het dus die volste reg om skepties te wees oor u versekering dat daar binne vier maande op die Zondo-kommissie se aanbevelings gereageer sal word. Enige optrede sal per slot van rekening verreikende implikasies vir die regerende party self hê, asook vir baie leiers en openbare verteenwoordigers binne die regerende party.
Ons kan nooit weer terugkeer na ‘sake soos gewoonlik’ nie. As die regerende party word die ANC van growwe skendings teen Suid-Afrika aangekla. Dit gaan nie meer net oor staatskaping of korrupsie of kaderontplooiing nie. Die vraag is nou of Suid-Afrika dit kan bekostig om deur die ANC met sy skadelike ideologieë en beleide regeer te word. Vir veels te lank het die leiers van die ANC – u voorganger inkluis – van die standpunt uitgegaan dat die ANC eerste kom. Die ANC se leiers gee deurgaans voorkeur aan die belange van die party, bo dié van die land en die Suid-Afrikaanse grondwet. Ons het nou die resultate van hierdie onhoudbare situasie gesien.
Nog ’n struikelblok is die ANC se ongrondwetlike posisie wat betref sy kollektiewe verantwoordelikheid. Ons grondwet eis aanspreeklikheid, verantwoordelikheid en deursigtigheid. Die ANC-kollektief – sy strukture, verteenwoordigers en leierskap – is aandadig aan die huidige gemors waarin ons land hom bevind, en moet dus kollektief blaam aanvaar vir die ondermyning van ons staatsbestel.
Ons glo vas dat u tans by 'n kruispad staan. Om die uiters skadelike gevolge van staatskaping aan te spreek en die implementering van die Kommissie se aanbevelings te oorweeg, is van kardinale belang — nie net uit 'n finansiële oogpunt nie, maar ook om die vertrouensbreuk wat ons nou in die gesig staar, aan te spreek. U wys dikwels daarop dat apartheid 'n misdaad teen die mensdom was. In dieselfde trant moet toegegee word dat staatskaping, en die gevolglike ongebreidelde korrupsie, eweneens 'n misdaad teen Suid-Afrika en sy mense is. Dit kan nie meer betwis word nie.
Ons glo u sal tussen Suid-Afrika en die ANC moet kies wanneer u die aanbevelings oorweeg wat deur Hoofregter Raymond Zondo gemaak is. U sal moet kies tussen die disfunksionele ANC-alliansie en onbekostigbare party-eenheid aan die een kant, en 'n suksesvolle en welvarende Suid-Afrika aan die ander kant. Wanneer dit kom by die redding van hetsy die ANC-alliansie of die land, kan u nie albei doen nie; nie op hierdie punt in die geskiedenis nie, en nie in die lig van Suid-Afrika se verdeelde en brose toestand nie.
In u weeklikse nuusbrief van 27 Junie 2022 en met verwysing na staatskaping het u gesê: “Die immorele, onetiese en kriminele gedrag van selfdienende individue in gesagsposisies het die vertroue van die mense in die leiers en instellings wat bedoel is om hulle te dien, ondermyn. Dit het ’n vertrouensgaping geskep wat ’n rukkie sal neem om te herstel.”
(Ons vertaling) Hierdie sin impliseer dat u baie goed weet dat die individue na wie u verwys óf lede en verteenwoordigers van die ANC is, óf `n noue verbinding met die party het.
U word herinner aan die Ampseed wat u as President van die Republiek van Suid-Afrika afgelê het, toe u verklaar het, “in die volle besef van die hoë roeping wat ek as President van die Republiek van Suid-Afrika aanvaar, sweer ek […] plegtig trou aan die Republiek van Suid-Afrika, en dat ek die Grondwet en die ander reg van die Republiek sal gehoorsaam, eerbiedig, onderhou en handhaaf.” U het plegtig en opreg belowe dat u te alle tye:
- “sal bevorder wat tot die voordeel van die Republiek is en sal afweer wat die Republiek kan skaad;
- die regte van alle Suid-Afrikaners sal beskerm en bevorder;
- u pligte met al u kragte en talente na u beste kennis en vermoë en getrou aan die stem van u gewete sal verrig;
- aan almal reg sal laat geskied; en
- u aan die welsyn van die Republiek en al sy mense sal wy.”
Nog nooit in die geskiedenis van ons nuwe demokrasie het getrouheid aan die voorskrifte van sy gewete dieper geresoneer vir 'n president van Suid-Afrika nie. Die tyd het gekom, en hoe u op die aanbevelings van die Zondo-kommissie reageer sal u blywende nalatenskap wees. Uiteindelik moet u besluite en optrede dié van die President van die Republiek van Suid-Afrika wees, en nie die president van die ANC nie.
Staatskaping en grootskaalse korrupsie het Suid-Afrika onherroeplik geskaad. U ampseed vereis optrede, en die regerende party sal ongetwyfeld die prys moet betaal. Die keuse berus by u – lojaliteit aan die ANC ten alle koste, of om in belang van die land en alle Suid-Afrikaners deur die voorskrifte van u gewete gelei te word.

Statement by Die Afrikanerbond
Open letter to President Ramaphosa – The President’s choice between a dysfunctional ANC on the one hand, and South Africa on the other – It cannot be both!
The letter below by Dries Wiese, Chairperson of the Afrikanerbond was sent to the office of President Ramaphosa yesterday.
The office of the president already acknowledged receipt of the letter.
Dear President Ramaphosa
When you received and publicly released the final Report into State Capture on 22 June 2022, you indicated that, “in line with the directive of the High Court, within four months from this date, I will formally present to Parliament the full report of the Commission together with an indication of my intentions on the implementation of the Commission’s recommendations.”
The media highlighted the estimated cost of the state capture to be R57 billion. This amount was looted from the state coffers by the Gupta family and their followers, and they pocketed at least R15,5 billion themselves.
The Zondo report estimates that 97% of the R57 billion was looted from Transnet and Eskom (Rapport, 26 June 2022), amid continued maladministration and corruption in state departments and our local governments. As we draft this letter, South Africa is paying the price. We’re having to endure up to stage 6 loadshedding due to decades of maladministration, theft and sabotage at Eskom, a state-owned entity.
The July 2021 unrest saw billions more looted and infrastructure vandalised by unruly mobs. To date, no satisfactory reasons or responses have been forthcoming with regard to the riots and looting, which also had their origins within deep ANC divisions and the arrest and imprisonment of Mr Jacob Zuma. Anarchy threatened our constitutional democracy, and the scale of unrest should have been prevented.
There is currently a massive trust deficit in South Africa. Civil society has lost trust in government, politicians, civil service and the police. This could have been addressed (at least partly) in the national consensus you promised in the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on 10 February 2022, which was supposed to have happened within 100 days of SONA – yet another broken promise.
South Africans therefore have every right to be sceptical about your assurance of a response to the Zondo Commission’s recommendations within four months. It goes without saying that any action will have far-reaching implications for the ruling party itself, and for many leaders and public representatives within the ruling party.
It can never again be business as usual. As the ruling party, the ANC stands accused of gross violations against South Africa. It is no longer only about state capture, or corruption, or cadre deployment. The question now is whether South Africa can afford to keep the ANC, with its harmful ideologies and policies, as the ruling party. For far too long, leadership in the ANC - your predecessor included - has held the position that the ANC comes first. Leadership has consistently placed the ANC ahead of the country and the South African constitution. We have now seen the results of this untenable situation.
Another obstacle is the unconstitutional position of the ANC with a view to its collective responsibility. Our constitution demands accountability, responsibility and transparency. The ANC collective - its structures, representatives and leadership - stands accused of the current mess in which our country finds itself, and must therefore collectively accept blame for undermining our state order.
We firmly believe that you are now at a crossroads. Addressing the enormously damaging effects of state capture and considering the implementation of the Commission’s recommendations is crucial, not only from a financial standpoint, but also to address the trust deficit we are now facing. You often point out that apartheid was a crime against humanity. In the same vein, it must be conceded that state capture, and the resultant unbridled corruption, is equally a crime against South Africa and its people. This can no longer be disputed.
We are of the firm opinion that in considering the recommendations made by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, you will have to choose between South Africa and the ANC. Between the dysfunctional ANC alliance and the huge cost to the country of party unity on the one hand, and a successful and prosperous South Africa on the other. When it comes to a choice between salvaging the ANC alliance or saving the country, you cannot do both; not at this point in history, and not in light of South Africa’s torn and fragile state.
In your weekly newsletter of 27 Junie 2022 and with reference to state capture you said: “The immoral, unethical and criminal behaviour of self-serving individuals in positions of authority undermined the confidence of the people in the leaders and institutions that are meant to serve them. This has created a trust gap that will take some time to close.” This sentence implies that you know full well that the individuals to whom you are referring are either members and representatives of the ANC or closely aligned to the party.
You are reminded of the Oath of Office that you, as President of the Republic of South Africa, swore, namely “to be faithful to the Republic of South Africa, and [to] obey, observe, uphold and maintain the Constitution and all other law of the Republic”. You solemnly and sincerely promised that you would always:
- “promote all that will advance the Republic, and oppose all that may harm it;
- protect and promote the rights of all South Africans;
- discharge your duties with all your strength and talents to the best of your knowledge and ability and true to the dictates of your conscience;
- do justice to all; and
- devote yourself to the well-being of the Republic and all of its people.”
Never in the history of our new democracy has being true to the dictates of one’s conscience resonated more deeply for a president of South Africa. The time is now, and your actions on the recommendations of the Zondo Commission will be your lasting legacy. Ultimately, your decisions and actions must be those of the President of the Republic of South Africa, and not the president of the ANC.
State capture and large-scale corruption have irrevocably harmed South Africa. Your Oath of Office demands action, and undoubtedly the governing party will pay the price. The choice is yours – loyalty to the ANC at all costs, or being guided by the dictates of your conscience in the interest of the country and all South Africans.
