Statement by Jan Bosman
Chief Secretary of the Afrikanerbond

South Africans and tourists become crime statistics while 209 VIP politicians are protected 24 hours a day at a cost of R2 billion

This week, South Africans were once again shaken by yet more senseless murders. The murder of the German tourist, farm murders and attacks are all part of the daily statistics. A minister visits the crime scene while others preach to the world that tourists are safe in the country and that only three have been murdered so far. While 71 South Africans are being murdered daily, no minister can give the assurance that either our people or visitors to our country are safe. It paints a picture of a government that has lost track of reality.

Our biggest concern is that the victims — including tourists — become, over time, just more crime statistics. People at Camps Bay, a top tourist destination, yesterday had to witness the murder of two persons in broad daylight. It is easy to dismiss crime and its consequences offhandedly when one receives protection 24 hours a day. While a further R2 billion is being spent in 2022 on VIP police protection — for the president, 28 ministers and 34 deputy ministers, the parliamentary speaker and chairperson and nine prime ministers, nine provincial speakers and deputies as well as 87 MECs — the average South African is caught up in a low-intensity crime war (see report on this). It was calculated last year that the annual cost to protect each individual VIP amounts to some R8 million, with 209 VIPs receiving protection (see report on this).

However, the question that should be asked is this: What else needs to happen before the South African government will act? Crime and lawlessness and associated concerns about the decay of the criminal justice system in South Africa and the sabotage of infrastructure are now reaching a tipping point.

An incisive reflection on the entire crime situation in South Africa is required because so far, each government strategy against crime has failed spectacularly. However, new plans cannot work if there is no trust in either the police minister or his police leadership structure. At the very least, the South African public deserves an unimpeachable police service in this period of rampant crime and corruption. That can only happen with leadership that is committed to fighting crime. A mere visit to a crime scene is not going to help. Promises alone do not bring solutions either, and effective and visible policing with integrity is required.
