- BELA and the Nedlac Settlement:
o Advancing language rights and quality education
The Afrikanerbond welcomes the encouraging progress made regarding Afrikaans education, following the decision not to implement clauses 4 and 5 of the BELA Act. These clauses aimed to centralise authority over school admissions and language policies.
This development reflects positively on the Government of National Unity, which has demonstrated its willingness to engage constructively with civil society, particularly with stakeholders who have actively participated in this important matter.
The Nedlac settlement, reached between the Presidency, the Minister of Education, Solidarity, and AfriForum, marks a pivotal step in upholding the principles of cooperative governance.
Secondly it can strengthen the partnership between state and school in the and further negotiations can solidify these partnerships, ensuring mutual benefits for all stakeholders.
Thirdly the democratic right of communities in decisions affecting their schools has been safeguarded in the interim.
Fourthly the importance of language rights has been recognised and reaffirms the value of mother-tongue education. The Afrikaans community has long demonstrated how education in one’s mother tongue contributes to academic excellence and high-quality outcomes.
The Afrikanerbond applauds all stakeholders who contributed to this landmark Nedlac settlement. In particular, we commend the leadership of Solidarity and AfriForum, whose efforts were instrumental in securing this outcome. Additionally, the contributions of political parties and other civil society actors deserve recognition.
This settlement highlights the importance of mutual respect and constructive dialogue in pursuing the best interests of our children’s education. The preservation of language diversity and educational quality benefits all South Africans, and we look forward to continued progress on these critical issues.
